Decade: 1940s

The basement at Old Main once served as the student union.

The classes of 1938 and 1939 donated Carnegie Library’s new floors, which incorporated the College seal in the entranceway. Students developed a tradition of avoiding stepping on the seal, as seen in this image from around 1947.

In the summer of 1941, lightning struck Old Main. The building sustained substantial damage from the resulting fire.
