Henry Cowles Smith was the longest-serving faculty member in North Central College’s history. The son of President A. A. Smith, he began teaching vocal and instrumental music at Plainfield College in 1862. Except for five terms when he conducted advanced study in Chicago and at Oberlin, H. C. Smith served as professor of music and professor of classics until 1922.
